I hope everyone had a wonderful break. Midterms are fast approaching. For the review, make sure you bring all of your class notes. Here is the schedule:

1st period – Jan. 11-12 review. Jan. 13 midterm

3rd period – Jan. 12 review. Jan. 13 midterm

4th period – Jan. 17 - Write midterm essay with the teacher you are assisting. Place essay in bin when finished. Please read the Midterm Essay directions.

6th period – Jan. 9 review. Jan. 11-start constructive speech. Jan. 18 midterm (and finish constructive speech)

7th period – Jan. 10 review. Jan. 12-start constructive speech. Jan. 19 midterm (and finish constructive speech)

After-school tutoring

Starting Nov. 29, I will be having tutoring sessions after school in room 319 from 2:45 to 3:30 on Tuesdays. If you need help with your debates or your articles, please stop by for extra assistance.

The Scholarships Project, the Service Project, the Technology Challenge are all PAST DUE (see rubrics below).

You don’t have to do a journal for Thanksgiving week, as there’s only one day of class. If you do things that day, just write about them in the following week’s journal. You do, however, need to complete a journal for the week before winter break.

Students, make sure that you stay with your teacher unless on errands. When running errands, make sure you are wearing your white pass. If you are missing your pass, please go to Ms. Fye’s office for a teacher assisting pass. Also, you should NOT be going to the media center if you don’t have any work to do for your teacher. At this point, if you are missing your pass or are found in the media center, hallways, front office, cafeteria, or any location where you are not supposed to be, you will receive a zero for the week’s journal and a zero for the week’s teacher evaluation.

Regarding your journal entries, they should be at least two paragraphs and paint a vivid image for me of what you did. I should also be able to tell who your teacher is and what grade level the students are. If you don’t reflect on and describe the skills you learned, you won’t receive full credit. Thanks for all you are doing to assist our teachers.

If your teacher has not submitted the evaluation for the week, it is your responsibility to make sure they fill out the form. I have the form listed below, so you should print a few copies and give some to your teacher.

Each class period, you need to sign in next to the teacher time clock in Building B. Then head to your assigned teacher promptly. If you have any questions, please e-mail me at sridal@somersetacademy.com. You may turn your work into the bin, or you may send it to me via e-mail. Remember that each week you have journal entries to complete. Make sure to take and keep all of your graded work, as it’s your proof of completing the work.

E-Mail under 13 Consent

Parents: If your child in under age 13, I need a release from you stating that you are granting them permission to have an e-mail address. If you would like them to use your e-mail address instead, that is fine. On the form, please select one option: whether to allow your child to have an e-mail address, whether you are not allowing them to have an e-mail address, or whether he/she will be using your e-mail address.

If your child is under age 13, please fill out the Email under 13 consent form and submit it to me no later than Sept. 2.

Schedule Changes

If you need to change your schedule, you need to make sure that you fill out the Schedule Change Form and have your parents sign it. Please give the form to your HOMEROOM teacher. Do NOT go to guidance, as they will be calling you out of your classes for schedule changes or giving them to your homeroom teacher to pass on to you. Friday, Sept. 2 in the last day to turn in the forms; schedule change requests will not be accepted past that deadline.

Summer Reading

The school year is fast approaching, so I hope you’ve been reading your summer books. If not, here is Somerset’s summer reading for 2011. May I recommend a Kindle? They are super lightweight, are easy to read in the sunshine, and can save all the books you need.

On the Prowl

The first online student newspaper for Somerset Academy, The Prowler, is now available at www.theprowler.org. Ms. Ridal’s middle school journalism students have become reporters and have written some interesting stories. Students in the News Club have also contributed.

We are still looking for great photographers and need pictures from homecoming week. Please see Ms. Ridal with your memory stick if you would like to contribute pictures.

Also parents, I checked with treasurer Mr. Rodriguez, and he said that you CAN donate your volunteer hour money to the school newspaper. If you are paying online or are paying in the front office, just specify that you want to donate the funds to the school newspaper. We will be using the money to publish a print version, and any leftover funds will be used to purchase much-need cameras and equipment.

If you know anyone who would like to sponsor the paper or to advertise, please send me an e-mail. Thank you all for your support!
